Lecture: Ceramics in Roman construction. News about Baetulo.
By Esther Gurri, archaeologist and curator of the Museum of Badalona.
Since Greek times, the constructions of temples and some public buildings were made of stone, but the roofs and some of their crowns were made of ceramic. The same thing happened in the houses, despite having a stone plinth, the wall was built up with sun-dried brick (bricks made of mud and straw dried in the sun). A fact that we also see in the Etruscan world and later in the Roman world.
In Badalona, we have documented several construction elements made of ceramics, both to make facings and decorative elements, but in recent years a series of elements have been documented that bring us a little closer to the ceramic finishes of both the temples and the houses, both outside and inside them.
