Village street (El carrer del temple)

1894

de Joan Roig i Soler (Barcelona 1852-1909)

View of Badalona with Temple street, the house called Can Real and the church of Santa Maria and the Torre Vella in the background. In the foreground you see a street (now via Augusta), where there is a pottery saleswoman sitting with all the pieces lying on the floor around her. The scene is set on a sunny day, with a bright, cloudless sky, typical of the Sitges lighting school in which the author is framed.

We know the exact date when the painting was painted thanks to a note published in the weekly El Badalonés of May 12, 1894, which documents that Roig Soler was copying the natural one in Badalona, in particular a panoramic view of Temple street, with the church, the tower and Can Real.

We also know, at least, two more versions of a similar view: one kept in Carmen Thyssen’s collection and the other, in a private collection.

The work was acquired by Badalona City Council in 2000.
