Lecture: Salve viator! New data on the roads and remains documented in the western suburb of Baetulo during the intervention on Coll i Pujol’s street.

By Mikel Soberón, archaeologist at Global Mediterrània.

During the months of September 2019 and March 2020, an intervention was carried out on the site that until then had been occupied by a block of flats built during the Second Republic and known as the green houses. It is located between Sant Ramon’s street, Coll i Pujol’s street and Alcalde Xifré’s square.

The intervention covered an area of almost 1000 m2, and the chronology of the finds marks a historical period of almost 1000 years, beginning with a small Iberian settlement of the s. V BC, and ends with an abandoned building in the s. VI AD.

One of the elements that articulate this site are the several paths that cross it, from south to north, and that correspond in Roman times to the section of the Via Augusta. A metallurgical work area, a burial area and several dwellings were also documented.

We are therefore in front of one of the sites that show us a longer and continuous occupation of the area of Badalona. And it also allows us to get to know better what the western suburb of the city of Baetulo was like, in which, with the interventions of recent years, a high occupancy has been documented.

In the framework of the cycle of lectures Archaeological novelties.
